They are trained with a special instrument known as polygraph which helps them in unearthing the lie on face itself. It is a detective tool that can smell when someone lies. The polygraph device is a way for the USSS to ensure that they can depend on who works with them.
The polygraph uses body responses to questions. Normally, our body reacts when we lie and proves that whether or not we are telling the truth. These changes are identifiable with a polygraph and help the USSS determine if they are being lied to.
These sensors are able to even take heart rate, blood pressure and sweat readings. While being questioned, the polygraph device responses in a person's body. The training experts then analyze this data to determine if a person is being honest.

The USSS uses a polygraph test as part of the process in determining which employees they will retain. Some people may have to pass a polygraph test in order for them to be able to work with the USSS. This test is necessary to ensure the USSS can rely on them to perform their job duties correctly and keep sensitive information secure.

In the case of the USSS polygraph, where some people might be inclined to cheat, they will try to control their bodies so as not to give away signs of deception. They will come up with a logical explanation to try and soothe you, even if it is a lie. But the USSS poly is designed to catch that shit — it still gets while you too. This avoids one trying to be smart and lie his way out of the system.

The student is hooked up to a polygraph device with the USSS and is asked a series of questions while they are monitored for their body's reactions on sensors. The questions can be on anything like their background, occupation or any other identity. It typically takes one hour to take the test, and another hour for the experts to analyze results.
